Which kind of winter coat?

Four kinds, decided by length, what keeps you warm and how dressed-up it reads. Each one jumps to its picks.

Not here: work jackets and fall coats. Blanket- or quilt-lined canvas jackets — Detroits, chore and barn coats — have their own page, and a light mac or an unlined cotton layer is a fall coat. Everything here is built for winter: down or synthetic fill, or heavy wool.

Own a coat or jacket that already fits?

Pick it and your size. We'll compare its chest, length and shoulder with the 7 coats here whose makers publish garment measurements, and show which fit the same and which run bigger or smaller.

How we picked these

Updated October 22, 2026.

Most men buy one of four winter coats: a puffer, a parka, a wool overcoat or a peacoat. We started from the ones people name — the Nuptse, the Canada Goose parka, the McMurdo, the N-3B, the Schott and L.L.Bean peacoats, the duffle — and looked for the best version of each kind for everyday city wear rather than expeditions. We also read 200 winter-coat threads on Reddit (about 23,000 comments) for what owners back and what they regret; the FAQ quotes their advice with the number of people behind it. About half the list comes from quieter labels that make the same coats for town — A.P.C., nanamica, Snow Peak, Stüssy, Universal Works and Uniqlo — and there is a cheap way into each kind where one exists. Every fill power, temperature rating, shell and weight on this page is quoted from the maker's own product page; where a maker doesn't state something, we say so rather than fill the gap.

nanamica sells this coat through stockists only, so its price is an authorised stockist's US-dollar listing and its specs are stockists' copies of nanamica's own; every other price was read on the maker's own US site or US storefront on October 21 (The North Face McMurdo and the L.L.Bean peacoat on October 22; L.L.Bean's from its US search listing, because its product pages send our Canadian connection to llbean.ca). Three coats are shown only on a model by their maker or seller, so those cards use a stockist's photo of the same coat, credited in Quick View. Picks are chosen on merit, including the ones Disco earns nothing from.

Measured, or not sized at all

7 of these coats have a garment chart from their maker — the coat laid flat and measured — and those are the only ones we'll give you a size for. The North Face, Filson, Canada Goose, Alpha Industries, Universal Works, Schott NYC, L.L.Bean, A.P.C. publish no garment chart for these coats — a body chart, which describes the person rather than the coat, a size conversion, or nothing — so their cards say so. A winter coat goes over a sweater: compare the chest with a coat you own before you trust the label.

Winter coat FAQs

Puffer or parka?

A puffer's quilted fill is the jacket: it is light, warm for its weight and usually stops at the waist or hip. A parka always has a hood and puts a shell over the insulation — Canada Goose's Arctic Tech, The North Face's DryVent, Alpha's flight nylon, nanamica's waterproof GORE-TEX — and most run longer, so it handles wind and snow as well as cold. If you stand outside a lot, take the parka.

Does a longer coat keep you warmer?

It's the advice owners repeat most. In the Reddit winter-coat threads we read (200 threads, about 23,000 comments, October 2026), 52 people say in so many words that a coat covering your seat is warmer than any waist-length jacket. Here, Canada Goose cuts the Langford to mid-thigh, Alpha the N-3B to the thigh, and The North Face calls the McMurdo one of its longest men's jackets; the puffers stop near the waist.

What does fill power mean?

How much room an ounce of down fills: the higher the number, the more loft, and warmth, for the weight. The North Face states 700 for the Nuptse and 600 for the McMurdo, Filson 650 and Stüssy 600. Uniqlo, Canada Goose, Universal Works and nanamica state the down share instead (90%, 80%, 95% and 72% down), so those can't be compared on fill power, and we don't guess one. About 18 owners in the Reddit threads make the other half of the point: fill power alone isn't warmth — how much down is in the coat matters as much, and almost no maker states it.

What do the temperature ratings mean?

They are the makers' own estimates, not a shared standard. Canada Goose rates the Langford 5°F to -13°F (its TEI 4). Uniqlo's figure is a third-party lab's estimate of the lowest comfortable temperature: about -5°F for both the Light Down Volume Jacket and the Seamless Down Parka. Every other maker here publishes none.

How much wool should a wool coat have?

Owners set the bar at 80%. About 34 people in the Reddit threads we read name 80% wool, or the classic 80/20 wool-nylon melton, as the line; below it, they say, coats pill and wear thin sooner. On this page Schott's 740 (80/20), Gloverall's Monty (90%) and L.L.Bean's peacoat (100%) clear it; Uniqlo's Balmacaan (33%) and the Universal Works Stan (41%) don't, and nor does A.P.C.'s peacoat at 70%, the figure its stockist Kith lists.

Should I size up for a winter coat?

Check first, because several already run big. Canada Goose says the Langford runs large and to size down, Alpha suggests sizing down on the N-3B for a closer fit, Gloverall cuts the Monty oversized and Universal Works cuts the Stan Coat deliberately big. Owners on Reddit add that Canada Goose cuts athletic, L.L.Bean boxy, and Schott's peacoats boxy with sleeves that often need taking up. Where a garment chart exists, compare the chest with a coat you own.

How do I look after a down or wool coat?

Follow the care label first: Uniqlo's down is hand-wash, while Canada Goose and Gloverall say dry-clean only. Beyond that, owners in the Reddit threads wash down about once a year with a down-specific soap and tumble-dry it low with tennis balls, re-proof a shell's water-repellent finish while it's still damp, brush wool rather than wash it, and expect faux fur to look tired after a few winters. Some down leaks from new coats: 33 owners mention it, mostly on lighter, cheaper jackets.

Why do some coats have no measurements?

Because their makers don't publish the coat's own measurements. Most publish a body chart — the chest of the person it should fit — and Schott sizes the 740 by chest number alone. None of those can be compared with a coat you own, so those picks are never given a size here.
