How we picked these
Updated October 21, 2026.
A work jacket has long since left the jobsite: worn over a tee or a sweater, it is one of the easiest jackets a man can own. We started from the ones people name when they search for this — the Carhartt Detroit and Active Jac — and looked for the best version of each pattern at every price. About half the list comes from quieter labels that cut the same garment for town — A.P.C., JJJJound, Norse Projects, Snow Peak, Stüssy, Universal Works and Wax London — and there is a cheap way into each kind where one exists. Every fabric weight, lining and fit word on this page is quoted from the maker's own product page; where a maker doesn't state something, we say so rather than fill the gap.
Every price was read on the maker's own US site or US storefront on October 20 (the Carhartt WIP Michigan Coat on October 21). Picks are chosen on merit, including the ones Disco earns nothing from.
Measured, or not sized at all
8 of these jackets have a garment chart from their maker — the jacket laid flat and measured — and those are the only ones we'll give you a size for. Carhartt, Norse Projects, A.P.C., Snow Peak, Filson, Dickies publish no garment chart — a body chart, which describes the person rather than the jacket, a letter-size conversion, or nothing — so their cards say so. A lined jacket loses room inside; compare the chest with a jacket you own before you trust the label.
Work jacket FAQs
What's the difference between a chore coat and an overshirt?
The pattern. An overshirt is cut like a shirt — shirt collar, button front, usually unlined — and can be worn as one. A chore coat is cut like a jacket: an outer layer in canvas, duck or heavy denim, sized to go over a sweater. Overshirts have their own page.
Carhartt or Carhartt WIP?
Both sell a Detroit jacket, and they are different garments. On their own sites on October 20, Carhartt's J01 was 12-oz duck, cut relaxed, at $129.99, while Carhartt WIP's Detroit Jacket (Winter) was 11.3-oz Dearborn canvas at $265. WIP's is the one we can size against a jacket you own, because a garment chart for it exists.
Should I size up for a lined work jacket?
Often, if you layer. Carhartt WIP recommends a size up on its Detroit Jacket (Winter) if you wear something under it, because of the blanket lining, and Wax London's size guide for the lined Mason suggests measuring a similar item from your wardrobe. That is the surest check: compare the chest with a jacket that fits.
What does the ounce figure on a canvas jacket mean?
Fabric weight: how heavy a set area of the cloth is, so a higher number is a denser, stiffer canvas. Every canvas and duck pick here that states a weight sits between 11 and 12 oz, and Snow Peak's denim is 10.7 oz; eight of the fifteen state no weight at all, and we say so rather than guess.
Why do some picks have no measurements?
Because their makers don't publish the jacket's own measurements. Most publish a body chart — the chest size of the person it should fit — and some only a letter-size conversion or nothing at all. None of those can be compared with a jacket you own, so those picks are never given a size here.
