Carhartt Double-Knee Work Pant

63 recommend · 24 warn · 168 in the last year

Carhartt

Double-Knee Work Pant

The workwear chorus, brand-level — mainline double-knees dominate the mentions (“double knee Carhartts lasted forever”), distinct from the WIP Single Knee in our grid above. The warns are mostly about fashion-fit expectations, not failure.

double knee Carhartts lasted forever

Owners report straight leg, double knees give more structure · extremely well built · holds up to abuse

Shop Carhartt
Uniqlo Jeans & EZY Pants

58 recommend · 3 warn · 230 in the last year

Uniqlo

Jeans & EZY Pants

The cleanest sentiment of any high-volume name — 23-0 over the last twelve months, across jeans, EZY and selvedge lines blended (this row doesn't separate them). The one recurring grumble: newer pairs run thinner than the pairs people are replacing.

I've found Uniqlo seems to do a good job for a decent price

Owners report newer pairs thinner than before · waistband instead of pocket · 6 years, no mends

Shop Uniqlo
Levi's 501 Original

57 recommend · 30 warn · 4117 in the last year

Levi's

501 Original

The most argued-about pant on Reddit. The 501 itself splits 57-30 — and the Levi's brand row splits almost exactly even — with the praise on the 100% cotton originals and the complaints clustering hard on one thing: tight thighs. If you're straight-legged and lean, the record is much better than the topline.

Had some 100% cotton 501's for 4 years now with no issues.

Owners report 100% cotton, sanforized · thighs are too tight · too tight at the thighs

Shop Levi's
Dickies 874 & work pants

49 recommend · 15 warn · 177 in the last year

Dickies

874 & work pants

Brand-level, spanning the 874 (our value pick above) and its carpenter siblings. “Sturdy as hell” and “last forever” carry the recommends; the one repeated failure is crotch wear-through, flagged mostly by bigger-thighed owners.

classic blue work pants 10 years ago. Still have the creases. No fraying.

Owners report sturdy as hell · last forever · crotch wears out very very quickly, problematic for big thighs

Shop Dickies
Iron Heart Heavyweight Denim

42 recommend · 5 warn · 203 in the last year

Iron Heart

Heavyweight Denim

The denim-forum splurge consensus: 42-5, with the recommends explicit that the price is the point (“they BETTER last at least one lifetime”). The strongest per-mention conviction of any premium name in the corpus.

Adore my pairs of them, even if they're pricy

Owners report fits me so well · good fit · no spandex

Shop Iron Heart
Bonobos Chinos & Weekday Warriors

29 recommend · 9 warn · 151 in the last year

Bonobos

Chinos & Weekday Warriors

A fit-first recommendation — “found the fit I like and can just buy a bunch of colors” — with an honest wrinkle: the chinos-specific row actually runs net negative (5-6), on sizing consistency and synthetic fabrics. The brand row's 29-9 is carried by owners who found their cut and stayed.

Bonobos. Found the fit I like and can just buy a bunch of colors

Owners report sizing was so poor, ordered 8 pairs and kept two · synthetic fabrics, not 100% cotton or wool · good quality, accurate sizing, lots of fits

Shop Bonobos
Duluth Trading Firehose & Ballroom pants

27 recommend · 5 warn · 81 in the last year

Duluth Trading

Firehose & Ballroom pants

Same story as their tees row: unglamorous and barely contested. The crotch gusset gets named specifically, and the durability reports run “take a beating and last years.”

Duluth makes the crotch of their pants different, I think it's called a gusset

Owners report take a beating and last years · hold up well · most comfortable jeans ever owned

Shop Duluth Trading
Lululemon ABC Pant

23 recommend · 7 warn · 32 in the last year

Lululemon

ABC Pant

The office-athleisure answer, line-level: still-look-new reports going back to 2018. The trade-off is structural — the thigh-friendly cut forces some owners into an oversized waist.

Dress up pants Lululemon ABC pants

Owners report stretch for thick thighs and waist, comfortable, look nice · super tight around waist, thigh fit forces oversized waist · look new after a year of frequent wear

Shop Lululemon
Wrangler 13MWZ Cowboy Cut

22 recommend · 0 warn · 130 in the last year

Wrangler

13MWZ Cowboy Cut

Twenty-two recommendations, zero dissenters, ever — at $30. (The Wrangler brand row runs 92-15 but blends every line; this is the one people actually name.) The standing advice: size up one from your Levi's size, and expect real break-in.

The wrangler cowboy cut(13wmz) is what you want

Owners report Buy 1 size up from what you wear in levis · bulletproof and comfy once broken in · thick and durable denim, durable rivets, higher rise

Shop Wrangler
orSlow 105 / 107 / Fatigues

18 recommend · 1 warn · 111 in the last year

orSlow

105 / 107 / Fatigues

Also our best fatigue pick

The menswear-forum pick for Japanese repro without ceremony: 18-1, “lasts forever and looks better with each wear.” The fatigues carry a chunk of the mentions — the same pant that takes Best fatigue in our grid.

Can't personally vouch for jeans, but love their other pants

Owners report Great cuts · loyal for years · interesting fabrics, great fits, fantastic quality

How we picked these

Every pair on this page was chosen on merit, including the ones Disco earns nothing from — a list of casual trousers without the $30 Dickies 874 or the Levi's 501 isn't credible. We buy or handle what we can, measure the rest garment to garment, and check prices against tracked retailer stock rather than list pages. Seven pairs carry an award; the other eleven are here because they're genuinely good, not to fill positions twelve through eighteen.

Rise decides more than the fit name

Two brands can both call a trouser relaxed and cut them four inches apart at the rise, which is the measurement that actually decides where they sit on you. Disco records waist, rise, inseam and thigh flat for every size we've measured, so high rise here means a number rather than a marketing adjective. Give us one pair you already like and every measured pick on this page is sized against it.

Casual pants FAQs

What is rise, and why does it matter more than the fit name?

Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, and it decides where the trousers sit on you. Anything under about 10 inches sits on the hips; 11 to 12 is the modern middle; above 13 sits at the natural waist. Two pants both called “relaxed” can differ by four inches of rise and wear nothing alike.

Should I size up in raw denim?

Only if the jean is unsanforized, which shrinks about an inch in the waist on the first soak. Sanforized raw — which is most of what is sold — stretches roughly an inch at the waist with wear and then holds. Buy sanforized true to the measured waist, not to the size on the tag.

What is the difference between a chino and a work pant?

Cloth weight and how the pockets are built. A chino is lighter twill with slash pockets and a clean front; a work pant is heavier canvas or duck with reinforced seams and utility pockets. The silhouettes have converged, so the label tells you less than the fabric weight does.

How much does the waist measurement on a size tag mean?

Less than you would like. Tagged sizes are nominal and vary by several inches between brands. Every measured pick on this page lists the actual flat waist, which is half the circumference — double it and compare against a pair you already own rather than against the tag.
