Saddleback’s Huntsman boot is built on the US Army’s Munson last
A leather lace-up boot handcrafted in Italy, with a three-layer rubber sole Saddleback designed itself. $679, in Natural or Dark Coffee Brown.

The Huntsman is a lace-up leather boot from Saddleback Leather Co., the Texas company better known for its bags and briefcases. It is handcrafted in Italy and costs $679, in two colours: Natural, shown here, and Dark Coffee Brown.

The sole
The sole is the part Saddleback talks about most. It calls it the Good Sole and layers three rubber compounds: a hard heel (80 on Saddleback’s hardness scale) screwed down into a stack of leather, a 70-hardness half sole where the boot meets the ground, and a softer 60-hardness layer above it to absorb shock. Saddleback says the boot can be resoled again and again without wearing out the welt.

The last
The shape comes from the Munson last, which US Army boots were built on from 1912 until about 1970, according to Saddleback. The Huntsman is based on the first of the last’s six generations, with a sleeker toe.

Sizing
Saddleback sizes the Huntsman true to a Brannock device, in US men’s sizes 6 to 15, in standard and wide widths. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
