How we picked these
Updated September 16, 2026.
Every pair on this page was chosen on merit, including the ones Disco earns nothing from — a list of casual trousers without the $30 Dickies 874 or the Levi's 501 isn't credible. We buy or handle what we can, measure the rest garment to garment, and check prices against tracked retailer stock rather than list pages. Seven pairs carry an award; the other eleven are here because they're genuinely good, not to fill positions twelve through eighteen.
Rise decides more than the fit name
Two brands can both call a trouser relaxed and cut them four inches apart at the rise, which is the measurement that actually decides where they sit on you. Disco records waist, rise, inseam and thigh flat for every size we've measured, so high rise here means a number rather than a marketing adjective. Give us one pair you already like and every measured pick on this page is sized against it.
Casual pants FAQs
What is rise, and why does it matter more than the fit name?
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, and it decides where the trousers sit on you. Anything under about 10 inches sits on the hips; 11 to 12 is the modern middle; above 13 sits at the natural waist. Two pants both called “relaxed” can differ by four inches of rise and wear nothing alike.
Should I size up in raw denim?
Only if the jean is unsanforized, which shrinks about an inch in the waist on the first soak. Sanforized raw — which is most of what is sold — stretches roughly an inch at the waist with wear and then holds. Buy sanforized true to the measured waist, not to the size on the tag.
What is the difference between a chino and a work pant?
Cloth weight and how the pockets are built. A chino is lighter twill with slash pockets and a clean front; a work pant is heavier canvas or duck with reinforced seams and utility pockets. The silhouettes have converged, so the label tells you less than the fabric weight does.
How much does the waist measurement on a size tag mean?
Less than you would like. Tagged sizes are nominal and vary by several inches between brands. Every measured pick on this page lists the actual flat waist, which is half the circumference — double it and compare against a pair you already own rather than against the tag.
