The 7 standouts
The tees that won a specific category after our research.
We don't rank 1–18 just to create a ranking.
A $20 everyday tee and a $150 loopwheel heavyweight solve different problems. We award the products that stand out for a specific fit, weight, price or use case.

Best overall
Lady White Co.
Our T-Shirt · $95 / 2-pack ($48 each)
Midweight · Regular · Made in USA
Why it wins
The best balance of fabric, collar, proportion and price in the group — the one to own if you own one.
Know before buying
Nearly $100 for a plain white tee; the value only shows up after the fifth wash.
Regular · standard length

Best value
Hanes
Beefy-T · $10
Heavyweight · Boxy · Made in Central America
Why it wins
Nothing else here costs $10 and still holds a collar. Boxy and short, which is exactly why it works.
Know before buying
Rough out of the bag and shrinks a full size on a hot wash — plan for it.
Boxy · shorter length

Best heavyweight
Camber USA
302 Heavyweight Pocket Tee · $30
Heavyweight · Boxy · Made in USA
Why it wins
Exceptionally dense cotton with a structured, old-school cut that holds its shape, at a third of the Japanese price.
Know before buying
Very structured initially and noticeably rougher than the premium alternatives.
Boxy · standard length

Best lightweight
Sunspel
Classic Crew Neck · $98
Lightweight · Slim · Made in England
Why it wins
Far lighter than the rest of this list, making it our pick for hot weather and layering under jackets.
Know before buying
Slightly sheer in white, and the slim cut leaves no room if you're between sizes.
Slim · standard length

Best boxy fit
Entire Studios
Standard T-Shirt · $85
Midweight · Boxy · Made in Portugal
Why it wins
The squared body other brands are imitating, cut wide with a collar firm enough to stand on its own.
Know before buying
The shoulders sit very wide; on narrower frames it reads oversized rather than boxy.
Boxy · standard length

Best classic fit
Uniqlo
Supima Cotton T-Shirt · $25
Midweight · Regular
Why it wins
Twenty-seven people recommended it this year and nobody argued — and it is the cleanest regular fit here at any price.
Know before buying
Batches vary and the jersey thins with age — owners who wear it hard report a season or two.

Why it wins
The clearest demonstration of what loopwheeled cotton actually feels like, from a label that makes nothing else.

3sixteen
Heavyweight 2-Pack · $95 / 2-pack ($48 each)
Heavyweight · Regular · Made in USA

Merz b. Schwanen
2S14 Loopwheeled · $110

Why we picked it
The heaviest cotton on the page by a wide margin, and the only one that reads closer to outerwear.

“Boxy” doesn't mean one thing.
Two brands can both call a tee “boxy” and cut it inches apart. These two are both ours, both measured from the brand's own published chart at size M — and they are 1.3" apart through the chest and 2.9" apart in the body. The word doesn't survive measurement, including when we use it.

1717 Garment Dyed Tee
The garment-dyed standard, and the most-recommended tee in the entire set — first in both the all-time and the last-twelve-months rankings. Owners split on longevity: plenty report a decade, a minority get armpit holes inside two years.
“I like Comfort Colors. I'm currently replacing my existing t-shirts with them”
Owners report don't lose shape even as gym shirts · a bit thick · 100% cotton decently heavy weight
Shop Comfort Colors ↗
94 recommend · 20 warn · 27–0 in the last year
Supima Cotton T-Shirt
Also our best classic fit pick
The only shirt our list and the communities independently landed on at the top. Third all-time, second over the last twelve months — and in that window not one person argued against it.
“Uniqlo's supima cotton tees do a pretty good job for me”
Owners report thinner than pre-pandemic version, quality dropped · increased in thickness, dyes get discolored patches from sweat and oils · got a hole in the arm after one cleaning
Shop Uniqlo ↗
45 recommend · 4 warn · 13–3 in the last year
Loopwheeled Tee
The community's loopwheel answer, at a fraction of what the Japanese labels above charge. Sizing is the catch — it runs small and shrinks at least a size in a dryer.
“thick loopwheeled tees from Japan”
Owners report no piling after years · come up a bit short and boxy · They run a tad small
Shop Whitesville ↗
40 recommend · 30 warn · 15–6 in the last year
Classic Crew Tee
The most heavily advertised tee on the internet and the most divided entry on this page — barely more than half the people who mention it are recommending it. The complaints cluster tightly on one thing: shrinkage.
“True Classic and Fresh Clean Threads are good t-shirts”
Owners report cheap the material felt · shrank fast · shrink after washing, not breathable
Shop True Classic ↗
34 recommend · 14 warn · 9–3 in the last year
5000 Heavy Cotton Tee
Contested, and worth showing for that: roughly one warning for every two recommendations. The complaints are all about stiff, itchy cotton; the praise is all about surviving years of daily abuse.
“Gildan is the worst brand of shirt you can buy”
Owners report long lasting, blend lasts longer than pure cotton · definitely hold up after several years of washes · still going strong after years
Shop Gildan ↗
31 recommend · 5 warn · 2–1 in the last year
Cotton Jersey T-Shirt
Read the two windows together rather than the headline: strong support all-time, almost none of it recent, and the owner notes say why — repeated reports of a changed fit and a drop in quality.
“I like reigning champ”
Owners report expect a quality nosedive · changed the fit, everything went to shit · construction holds up
Shop Reigning Champ ↗
23 recommend · 0 warn · 11–0 in the last year
Longtail T
Not one dissenting voice, in either window — and no brand with more recommendations than this has a clean record. Cut long on purpose so it stays tucked; several owners are still wearing theirs at fifteen years.
“They last for years and are longer so they stay tucked in.”
Owners report still have them after 15 years · thick and heavy weight cotton · heavyweight
Shop Duluth Trading ↗
20 recommend · 4 warn · 5–2 in the last year
Carefree Unshrinkable Tee
Boxy, long-lived and cheap to replace — the durability reports run to fifteen and twenty years. The recurring warning is the collar: give it a dryer and you get bacon neck.
“They are boxy, which I like and they last”
Owners report has fallen off · last quite a while · 15-20 year old Henleys still worn regularly
Shop L.L.Bean ↗
18 recommend · 5 warn
Classic Cotton T-Shirt
The USA-made heavyweight the communities reach for when the budget stretches past Comfort Colors. The longevity claims here are the most concrete on the page — “lasted me years”, “will likely live another decade”.
“ready to splurge on buck mason or American giant if needed”
Owners report lasted me years · really well made · held up rather well

17 recommend · 5 warn · 2–0 in the last year
2-Pack Crewneck Tee
Tubular-knit Japanese cotton at the tier below the loopwheelers above, and usually named in the same breath as Lady White Co. Owners are split on the hand: “prestige tier” from some, rough cotton and fraying collars from others.
“I've moved all my tees to Velva Sheen and Lady White Co.”
Owners report cotton is so rough · stitches at the hem look less robust, less finish on finer details · pinholes and fraying at the collar

Counts are distinct authors who clearly recommend or warn against the product; neutral mentions are excluded. Picks with fewer than 10 comments aren't charted — too little discussion to read as consensus, which is not the same as a bad review.

Disco curates and tracks 3,000+ brands, so selections aren't being made from a handful of affiliate partners.
Product research

7 products earned category awards. The remaining recommendations are included because we believe they're genuinely good — not because we needed to fill positions 8–17.

T-shirt FAQs
What actually counts as heavyweight?
Typically 7 oz per square yard and up, though it is a label the industry applies loosely and some brands start calling a tee heavyweight from about 6 oz — Hanes puts its Beefy-T at 6.1 and Carhartt its K87 at 6.75, and both wear like the category. A standard tee runs 4–5 oz; by 7 the shirt holds its shape instead of clinging and stays opaque in white, and from 8 up the drape reads visibly boxier. We print the stated weight on every pick so you can judge it rather than trust the word.
What is a loopwheel tee?
Cotton knitted slowly on vintage circular machines that produce a seamless tube, so the body has no side seams and the fabric is knitted under almost no tension. It costs more because the machines run at a fraction of modern speed.
Should I size up in a boxy cut?
Usually not. Boxy means the chest is already wide relative to the length, so sizing up mostly adds length and shoulder. Compare the flat chest measurement against a shirt you own before you decide.
Do heavyweight tees shrink?
Most shrink in length rather than width, typically half an inch to an inch on the first hot wash. Our measurements are pre-wash, and we note the brands where that matters.
