132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE is the Reality Lab line of Tokyo-based Issey Miyake Inc., launched in 2010 after a decade of research into computational origami with software developed by scientist Jun Mitani. Garments are formed from single pieces of recycled polyester that fold flat into geometric two-dimensional shapes and spring into sculptural three-dimensional forms when worn. The name reads as one cloth, a three-dimensional form folded into two dimensions, worn in a fifth dimension. Collections apply Japanese craft methods such as itajime clamp dyeing, and production stays in Japan.
