Almost every dark avant-garde wardrobe is built around a Rick Owens shape: long jersey tops, cropped wide trousers, tall sneakers. The core shapes recur season to season under the same names, so a first purchase stays useful.

Brands can sit in more than one direction. Each appears once.
Shops built around this world carry the deep sizing and the leather pieces: LN-CC and Machine-A in London, Antonioli in Milan, H. Lorenzo in Los Angeles, SSENSE online. H. Lorenzo and SSENSE carry Boris Bidjan Saberi and Julius; The Viridi-anne is easiest to find through Japanese shops such as Fascinate in Osaka and Kyoto.
Several of these houses sell direct: The Shop Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens' own stores, Dover Street Market for the Comme des Garçons family. Buying direct is the most reliable way to see a full collection rather than a buyer's edit.
Grailed, Vestiaire Collective and Japanese platforms such as Yahoo Japan Auctions and Mercari Japan carry archive Yohji, Undercover and Julius at a fraction of retail. Check measurements, not size labels, and expect fakes on the big logo brands.
1981. Yamamoto arrives in Paris. Yohji Yamamoto first showed in Paris in 1981, after nine years selling his Y's line only in Japan. His folded, draped clothes established black as a colour to wear on any occasion.
1986. The Antwerp Six go to London. Six young Belgian designers trained at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Ann Demeulemeester among them, took a shared stand at the British Designer Show in London in 1986. The group became known as the Antwerp Six.
1989. Margiela shows the inside. Martin Margiela, an Antwerp graduate who had assisted Jean Paul Gaultier from 1984 to 1987, founded his own Paris house, with his work traced from spring-summer 1989. He exposed linings, unfinished edges and the stages of manufacture.
Rick Owens, if the budget allows: long jersey tops, cropped wide trousers and the Geobasket high-top are the shapes the dark end is built on, and they come back season to season. The DRKSHDW diffusion line is the cheaper door (a Level T is $335). Julius gets close to the same layered black for less in jersey and cotton, but stock outside Japan is patchy.
Yohji Yamamoto for trousers: the washer wool gabardine culotte pants ($360) hang loose enough to read like a skirt. Issey Miyake's Homme Plissé if you want volume with no upkeep, because the pleats are heat-set into the finished garment and need no ironing. Sacai if you want one jacket that splices a denim trucker with MA-1 bomber sleeves.
Rick Owens: the Geobasket. Sacai: a spliced blouson. Issey Miyake: Homme Plissé trousers (from $425). 1017 ALYX 9SM: the Rollercoaster belt. Ambush: a silver ring. Comme des Garçons: CDG SHIRT, or Homme Plus for tailoring. One of these with otherwise plain black clothes says more than a full outfit of logos.
Yes, though mostly outside this list. Y-3 and Helmut Lang are the lowest-priced labels here, and diffusion lines such as Rick Owens DRKSHDW and CDG SHIRT cost less than the mainlines. For the proportion alone, Uniqlo's pleated wide trousers ($59.90) and oversized hoodie ($49.90) get you most of the silhouette; spend on the one jacket or shoe. Archive Yohji, Undercover and Julius also turn up on Grailed and Japanese resale sites.
Worth it if you want volume rather than fit and will wear one shape most days; the core shapes recur under the same names, so a first purchase stays useful. Skip it if you prefer trim clothes or are buying for a single occasion, because prices are high across the board. Start with DRKSHDW jersey or a pair of Geobaskets before the leather jackets.
Price spread: almost every brand here is high or very high priced, so the cheaper routes above sit outside the list. Haider Ackermann's own label is no longer active and is listed for reference only. Julius and The Viridi-anne are hard to find outside Japan, and the big logo labels, like Off-White and Balenciaga, attract fakes on resale.
