Hermès is a family-controlled Paris luxury house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès as a harness and saddle workshop. It makes leather goods, above all the hand-stitched Birkin and Kelly bags, plus silk carré scarves, ready-to-wear, watches, homeware and fragrance, with bags produced in French ateliers and sold on long waitlists. Axel Dumas, a sixth-generation family member, is executive chairman and Pierre-Alexis Dumas artistic director. In April 2025 Hermès briefly overtook LVMH as the world's most valuable luxury company by market capitalisation.
