What to know about Original Madras Trading Company

A fabric supplier that started selling shirts

The family sold handwoven madras to American clothing brands from 1973 onward, and only launched its own apparel line in 2020, still working from the same West 38th Street building.

Single-weaver handloom, not mill yardage

Cloth comes from individual handloom weavers in India, and shirts are numbered — so checks and colours vary rather than repeating season to season.

American collegiate cuts, Indian cloth

The range is button-down and camp-collar shirts, patchwork pieces, shirt jackets and blankets, tailored to classic US preppy fits rather than slim modern shapes.

Brand facts

Original Madras Trading Company is a family-run New York label built on handwoven Indian madras. The business began in 1973, when founder Prasan Shah's grandfather Ranjit Shah left Madras (now Chennai) for New York's garment district and supplied checked cotton to American clothing brands. It still operates from the same West 38th Street building, and launched its own apparel collection in 2020. The range centres on numbered button-down and camp-collar shirts, patchwork pieces, shirt jackets and blankets in single-weaver handloom cloth, with classic American collegiate fits.
