Athleta is a women's performance and lifestyle apparel brand founded in Petaluma, California in 1998 as a catalog retailer and acquired by Gap Inc. in 2008, where it remains one of four operating brands. The range covers leggings, sports bras, swim, travel and studio-to-street layers in technical knits and extended sizing, sold through US and Canadian stores plus franchise locations abroad. Certified as a B Corporation since 2018. Sales have contracted recently — first-quarter fiscal 2026 net sales fell 12% to $270 million — as Gap resets the assortment.
