1990s. Mountain down reaches New York. The North Face released the Nuptse in 1992 for mountain climbers. East Coast rappers and graffiti writers took it up, and it became a New York winter uniform.
2007. Supreme puts the logo on the Summit jacket. Supreme’s first collaboration with The North Face, in 2007, reworked Summit Series jackets in 1990s colour blocking with leopard-print linings. The two brands have collaborated almost every season since.
2017. The Cut names it gorpcore. On 25 May 2017 Jason Chen, writing for New York magazine’s The Cut, coined “gorpcore” for city dwellers in Patagonia fleece, North Face puffers and Arc’teryx parkas. His headline framed it as the step after normcore.
Gorpcore is a style that wears outdoor and hiking gear, such as waterproof shells, fleece and trail shoes, as everyday clothing. The name comes from gorp, hikers' slang for trail mix; the writer Jason Chen coined it in The Cut in May 2017.
Bright and retro: Patagonia's Classic Retro-X fleece and the Gramicci Pant. Quiet and technical: Arc'teryx or Rab shells. Trail-led: Salomon or HOKA trail runners. Relaxed and Japanese: And Wander, Nanamica or Montbell, though And Wander's stock outside Japan is thin.
Arc'teryx: the Beta shell. Patagonia: the Classic Retro-X fleece. Salomon: the XT-6. Gramicci: the Gramicci Pant, with its webbing belt and gusseted crotch. Montbell: the Plasma 1000 down jacket. The North Face: the Nuptse.
Start at the retro-camp end: a fleece and climbing or cargo pants, worn with shoes you already own. Uniqlo's Pile Lined Fleece Blouson is $69.90 against $259 for Patagonia's Classic Retro-X, and Patagonia's Torrentshell 3L, a 3-layer waterproof shell, is $189. No. Most of the look is shape and fabric: fleece, nylon and climbing pants work in town without any membrane. A waterproof shell matters only if you will be out in the rain, so buy that one for its membrane and venting. Many brands in the 'Outdoor worth wearing' group are cut for the mountain first, so check how a piece looks off the hill before paying for its specification.
They overlap. Gorpcore borrows recognisable hiking and climbing gear, often in earthy or bright colours; techwear is darker and more engineered, built around urban, tactical shapes. Acronym and Arc'teryx Veilance sit on the border between the two.
