Johnny Was makes bohemian womenswear centred on dense floral embroidery applied to silk, rayon and cotton. Signature pieces include embroidered kimonos, tunics, blouses and maxi dresses, alongside knitwear, jewellery, footwear and home textiles. Founded in Los Angeles in 1987, the label draws on California free-spirit dressing and global folk-craft motifs. Oxford Industries, owner of Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer, acquired the brand for $270 million in September 2022 and operates it as one of its lifestyle labels. Distribution spans owned stores, department stores and e-commerce.
