Matsuda
Matsuda started in 1967, when Mitsuhiro Matsuda founded his Tokyo fashion house under the Nicole Co. name; eyewear followed in 1989 and now defines the label. Frames are handmade in Sabae, Japan, through processes that can run to roughly 250 steps, using engraved titanium and filigree metalwork with references to Art Deco, Gothic architecture and Victorian ornament. Designs appeared in Beetlejuice and Terminator 2, and a late-1990s project with photographer Nan Goldin won an Art Directors Club of New York award. Sold via optical specialists and multi-brand retailers.
