All picks
Woven wool & lambswool
Woven wool is warm, hard-wearing and easy to tie. Lambswool is softer than plain wool and far cheaper than cashmere; a long one loops twice.

Fringe Wool Scarf – Narrow
Acne StudiosThe scarf once sold as the Canada: long, wide, midweight wool with fringed ends and the pink label. At 200 by 45 cm it wraps twice or folds. Unisex, nine colours, made in Italy.
Why this one: Over the Norse Projects: 10 cm longer and nearly twice as wide, so it doubles as a wrap, for $125 more.
100% wool (RWS-certified)Limitation: $250 for plain wool, Acne gives no care instructions, and the pink label is the point for some and a reason to skip it for others.

Norse Moon Merino Lambswool Scarf
Norse ProjectsA plain lambswool scarf with a contrast fringe, developed with and woven by Abraham Moon, one of England's last vertical mills. 100% merino lambswool, 190 cm long, made in England.
Why this one: Over the Acne Studios: an English mill-woven lambswool scarf for half the price, though narrower at 25 cm.
100% merino lambswoolLimitation: Two plain colours (a checked version is sold separately), and Norse Projects gives no care instructions.

HEATTECH Scarf
UniqloA brushed, plain scarf in a fine wool blend Uniqlo says is non-itchy and resists pilling. Unisex, five colours, and you can hand-wash it.
Why this one: Over the Barbour: about a third of the price and hand-washable, but mostly acrylic rather than lambswool.
65% acrylic, 35% woolLimitation: 65% acrylic, which is less warm than wool, and Uniqlo gives no size.

Cashmere
Cashmere is the warmest fibre for its weight and the softest on the neck, so it can be thin enough to sit under a tailored collar. Most of what you pay for is the yarn and the mill.

Cashmere Scarf
Johnstons of ElginPure cashmere woven and finished at Johnstons' mill in Elgin, with a ripple finish that raises a soft texture on the surface. 180 by 25 cm, in plain greys, navy, black, blue and red.
Why this one: Over the Burberry: plain Scottish cashmere for $380 less, without the check.
100% cashmereLimitation: Dry clean only, and at 25 cm it is narrower than the Acne Studios.

Cashmere Scarf
UniqloPure cashmere with fringed ends for under $70, in thirteen colours. Uniqlo cuts it compact, so it sits under a coat without bulk. Sold as unisex.
Why this one: Over the Johnstons of Elgin: pure cashmere for $225 less, though Uniqlo gives no size and says only that it is imported.
100% cashmereLimitation: No length or ply stated, and dry clean only. Reddit owners who discussed cheap cashmere report it pills sooner.

- Cashmere ScarfSpecs: Johnstons of Elgin product page ↗, checked 28 OctReported: The scarf Reddit owners named most: 21 people recommended a Johnstons of Elgin cashmere scarf, none against, in 9 of the 31 threads we read; 12 of them in one r/Scotland thread asking if it is worth the price.Editorial judgment: The cashmere scarf to buy once.
- Cashmere ScarfSpecs: Uniqlo product page ↗, checked 28 OctReported: Three Reddit owners recommended Uniqlo's scarves and two were against them.Editorial judgment: The cheapest way into real cashmere.
Check & tartan
The same woven scarf with the pattern doing the work: a check lifts a plain navy or camel coat. Lambswool tartans cost a fraction of cashmere ones.

Check Cashmere Scarf
BurberryThe House Check in pure cashmere, woven in Scotland on traditional looms and brushed with teasels to raise the surface. 168 by 30 cm, in 38 colourways.
Why this one: Over the Johnstons tartan: the Burberry check itself, 5 cm wider, for $380 more.
100% cashmereLimitation: The most expensive scarf here, specialist dry clean only, and the shortest woven one at 168 cm.

Black Watch Tartan Cashmere Scarf
Johnstons of ElginJohnstons' classic tartan in pure cashmere: Black Watch, the black, navy and green sett worn by Scottish soldiers for 270 years. 180 by 25 cm, made in Scotland.
Why this one: Over the Barbour: pure cashmere instead of lambswool, from a Scottish mill, for $215 more.
100% cashmereLimitation: Dry clean only, and a bold tartan is harder to wear with a patterned coat.

Inverness Tartan Scarf
BarbourBarbour's own Classic tartan in 100% lambswool, with a tasselled hem and the brand label near one end. 195 by 30 cm, long enough to loop.
Why this one: Over the Carhartt WIP: all lambswool rather than a wool-polyester blend, 22 cm longer, for $28 less.
100% lambswoolLimitation: Barbour doesn't say where it is made, and it is dry clean only.

Parson Check Scarf
Carhartt WIPA brushed wool-blend check with brushed fringes and the woven Square Label: a country scarf in streetwear colours. Carhartt WIP states its weight, 245 g/m², and 173 by 30 cm.
Why this one: Over the Barbour: a brushed hand and the Square Label, for $28 more.
73% wool, 27% polyesterLimitation: 27% polyester, and Carhartt WIP gives no care instructions or origin.

Knitted & ribbed
A knit traps more air than a weave, so it is warmer, but it is bulkier under a coat and stretches over time. These are bought as much for how they look.

Mongolian Cashmere Ribbed Scarf
QUINCEA plain 7-gauge rib in 100% Mongolian cashmere, 178 by 25 cm, unisex and in six colours: the cheap way into a knitted scarf for real cold.
Why this one: Over the Howlin': pure cashmere in a plain rib instead of a loud lambswool check, for $92 less.
100% Mongolian cashmereLimitation: At 25 cm it is narrow for a double wrap, and cashmere wants a cold hand wash and flat drying. Quince shows it product-only in just one gift-wrapped photo.

Cosmic Checkerboard Scarf
HowlinA checkerboard in two colourways that clash on purpose, from the Belgian knitwear label. Lambswool brushed with natural teasels, hand-finished in Scotland, 184 by 22 cm.
Why this one: Over the Margaret Howell: a louder pattern and a teasel-brushed surface, for $21 less.
100% lambswoolLimitation: Only 22 cm wide, and Howlin' gives no care instructions.

Textured Stripe Scarf
Margaret HowellA two-tone stripe knitted in lambswool with a soft hand, from Margaret Howell's MHL line. Soft rather than chunky; 176 by 25 cm, made in the UK, and hand-washable.
Why this one: Over the Howlin': a calmer stripe that goes with more coats, and hand-washable, for $21 more.
100% lambswoolLimitation: Knitted, so it sits bulkier under a collar than a woven scarf of the same length.

Trompe l'Oeil Scarf in Merino Blend
LEMAIREA fine merino-blend knit with sleeve-like side panels, so it ties like a sweater thrown over the shoulders. Rib-knit trim, made in Portugal, sold as unisex.
Why this one: Over the Margaret Howell: a shape no other scarf here has, for $145 more.
Merino blendLimitation: Lemaire gives no fibre percentages or size, and it sits over the shoulders more than around the neck.

Lightweight & neckerchiefs
Thin wool or cotton to close a collar on a cool day without the heat or bulk of a winter scarf.

Reversible Wool Himalayan Scarf
Universal WorksA light, reversible wool scarf handwoven in the Kullu and Kinnaur valleys of India, with the striped borders of the region's traditional shawls. Warm without weight for autumn and spring.
Why this one: Over the Wax London: a handwoven wool scarf you can loop, rather than a cotton neckerchief, for $61 more.
100% wool (merino)Limitation: Universal Works gives no size or care instructions.

Arnold Knitted Rib Scarf
Wax LondonA triangle neckerchief in ribbed cotton knit: it sits close at the collar instead of bulking up, and cotton won't scratch. Four colours.
Why this one: Over the Universal Works: half the price, and cotton that won't itch, though it only covers the neck.
100% cottonLimitation: Cotton is the least warm fibre here, and Wax London gives no size.

What different prices pay for
Fibre, not price, decides warmth: the $69.90 Uniqlo is pure cashmere, while the $108 Carhartt WIP is a wool-polyester blend.
You pay for budget cashmere, woven and in a knitted rib, acrylic-wool blends and a cotton neckerchief.
UNIQLO HEATTECH, UNIQLO Cashmere, Quince, Wax LondonYou pay for lambswool tartan, brushed wool checks, handwoven wool and English mill-woven lambswool.
Barbour, Carhartt WIP, Universal Works, Norse ProjectsYou pay for Scottish lambswool knits, long Italian wool and Scottish-woven cashmere.
Howlin', MHL., Acne Studios, Johnstons of ElginYou pay for designer knits and the Burberry check.
LEMAIRE, BurberryWhat matters when choosing
Fibre
Cashmere is the warmest for its weight and the softest; lambswool is nearly as warm for far less; merino is soft and fine. Acrylic and polyester feel soft but are less warm and pill sooner.
Length
About 180 cm (71 in) loops once and leaves ends to hang; much under 170 cm only drapes. Every scarf here with a stated size is 168 to 200 cm long.
Width
22 to 30 cm is the classic men's width and sits neatly inside a collar. Wider scarves, like Acne's 45 cm, fold over or double as a wrap.
Woven or knitted
A woven scarf is thinner, holds its shape and pills less. A knit is warmer and has more texture, but it is bulkier and can stretch.
Mill and origin
Scottish and English mills weave many of the scarves here: Johnstons in Elgin, Abraham Moon for Norse Projects, and the Scottish mill Burberry names for its check. 26 people in the Reddit threads we read brought up Scotland.
Care
Most wool and cashmere scarves are dry clean or hand wash only. Air them between wears, and store them folded with cedar against moths, which 11 people in the threads raised.

How we chose these
Disco editors picked for each use, not for one overall winner. These picks are based on research rather than lab testing; each group’s “Sources & research” lists what we used. Every price, fibre, size and origin was read on the maker's own US store on 28 Oct 2026. Reddit counts are distinct people in 31 hand-picked scarf-buying threads (965 comments) on r/malefashionadvice, r/BuyItForLife, r/frugalmalefashion, r/mensfashionadvice, r/Scotland and r/Costco. The chooser's temperature ranges are our rule of thumb.
All prices are in USD. A price with a “checked” date was confirmed on that shop’s page that day; the guide’s review date is separate. Some outbound links are affiliate links; they don’t affect which scarves we include.
