Acne Studios was founded in Stockholm in 1996 as part of the creative collective ACNE, and made its first 100 pairs of raw denim jeans in 1997. It is still Stockholm-based, with tailoring and denim at the centre.

Jockum Hallin, Cristopher Nying and Richardos Klarén founded Our Legacy in Stockholm in 2005, and it is still independent. It shows the Swedish habit of a familiar shape in a custom-developed cloth.

Polar Skate Co.$$

Pontus Alv founded Polar in Malmö in 2011, and he still owns and runs it. It is the clearest proof that Sweden has a skate scene with its own graphics.

Très Bien has sold menswear from Malmö since 2006 and now makes its own line next to the brands it stocks. Its buying mixes high fashion, sportswear and streetwear.

Klättermusen$$$$

Local climbers founded Klättermusen in Umeå in 1975 as a DIY workshop, and the company is now based in Åre. It is Sweden's technical outdoor answer, not a style label borrowing the look.

Stutterheim$$$

Alexander Stutterheim launched the brand in Stockholm in 2010, reworking his grandfather's 1960s archipelago raincoat. The first coats were handmade in Stockholm, only in black; production has since moved to continental Europe.

Childhood friends Sinan Abi Morshed and Per Fredrikson started Séfr in Malmö in 2012 as a vintage shop, and released the label's first full collection in 2016. The clothes carry that secondhand eye.

Why it matters The fabric carries the design, so it decides how a piece wears and washes; read the composition before you buy.

Why it matters Polar releases in editorial drops rather than chasing volume, so a graphic you like may not come back.

Background

The brief history of Swedish streetwear
  1. 1975Mountain gear from the north. A group of local climbers founded Klättermusen in Umeå in 1975, as a small DIY workshop. The company is now based in the mountain village of Åre.
  2. 1993-96Stockholm minimalism takes shape. Filippa Knutsson, Karin Hellners and Patrik Kihlborg founded Filippa K in Stockholm in 1993. Acne Studios followed in 1996, born from the ACNE creative collective.
  3. 2002-08Weekday and Cheap Monday. Weekday opened in 2002. By 2008 it was a unisex store chain in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg and Malmö, and H&M bought 60% of its parent, Fabric Scandinavien, whose biggest label, Cheap Monday, was mainly denim.
  4. 2005-06The independents arrive. Our Legacy was founded in Stockholm in 2005. A year later, Très Bien began selling menswear in Malmö; it now also makes its own line.
  5. 2010-12Skate, rain and Malmö menswear. Pontus Alv's 2010 skate video came before Polar Skate Co. in 2011. Stutterheim started in Stockholm in 2010, and CMMN SWDN launched in Malmö in 2012.
  6. 2016-19A new generation. Séfr, a Malmö vintage shop since 2012, released its first full collection in 2016. H&M launched Arket in 2017, and two Acne alumni started Stockholm Surfboard Club in 2019.
What counts as a Swedish brand

A brand is Swedish here if it was founded in Sweden or is based in Sweden today, and each entry says which; made in Sweden, a Swedish founder or a Scandinavian look is not enough.

Launched in Malmö in 2012 and later moved its headquarters to East London. It now calls itself Swedish-based and runs a store in Malmö.

Started in Sweden in 2002; H&M bought 60% of its parent company in 2008. Corporate ownership does not change where a brand comes from.

A Malmö menswear shop since 2006 that also makes its own line, so we list it as both a stockist and a label.
Which brands here are actually Swedish?

Twelve of the thirteen: Acne Studios, Our Legacy, Arket, Weekday, Filippa K, Stutterheim and Stockholm (Surfboard) Club from Stockholm; Très Bien, CMMN SWDN, Séfr and Polar Skate Co. from Malmö; Klättermusen from Åre. Rains is Danish, founded in Aarhus, and is listed as an alternative rather than part of the Swedish roster.

What are the most affordable options?

Weekday and Arket, both owned by H&M Group, sit in the low-mid tier — Weekday for jeans and graphic basics, Arket for wardrobe staples and homeware. Polar Skate Co. and Rains are mid. Acne Studios, Très Bien, CMMN SWDN and Klättermusen are the high-priced end.

Is Très Bien a brand or a shop?

Both. Founded in Malmö in 2006, it runs an e-store and physical stores in Sweden and the UK carrying other labels, and it produces its own menswear line of outerwear, trousers, knitwear and sneakers. On this page the entry refers to the in-house collection.

Which of these brands have circular or repair programmes?

Filippa K runs Preowned, a resale platform launched in 2021. Our Legacy's Work Shop line rebuilds deadstock and vintage material into limited pieces. Klättermusen builds recycled fabrics and repairability into its design brief. Arket lists material and origin details per garment. We don't claim the same for the rest of the list.

Most sell direct: Acne Studios, Our Legacy, Arket, Weekday, Filippa K, Stutterheim, Klättermusen and Rains all run their own stores and webshops. Très Bien stocks Stockholm (Surfboard) Club, which also sells through SSENSE, Tenue de Nîmes, HBX and Highsnobiety.
